Day 7 (aka Freedom): Intense 7 Day Detox
Written by Dr. Andrea Maxim, Naturopathic Doctor
With the shakes completed, I decided to introduce foods slowly. For the rest of you following along, if you want to see it out until the last possible minute of Day 7 keep going!! You’re doing awesome!
The morning was still the usual for the week, steamed broccoli and beans and one black coffee. Doing a Health Fair all day I barely had time to take a break and eat.
Now regarding reintroduction of foods, for most people unsure what they can and cannot eat I would do the following, as recommend by Dr. Robert Rakowski: Introduce one food group at a time and wait 4 hours between meals for any possible food reactions. It has been said that 98% of people will react to foods in the first four hours of reintroduction. This detox is really making sure that all potential food allergens have been sufficiently removed from the diet (wheat, gluten, soy, corn, cow dairy, eggs) and once introduced back into the diet, if the person has a sensitivity to it, should react. Now to completely clear an allergen from the diet can take up to 4 weeks, but they can still be a modestly obvious reaction after this detox.
What about the last 2% you ask? Well, this requires us to pay attention to foods we’ve consumed over the past three days. Some food sensitivities can take up to 72 hours to rear their ugly heads so really watch what you eat, when you eat it and how it makes you feel. Any food we eat should not cause us to feel worse than when we started to any negative reaction requires further investigation.
Here’s how the reintroduction phase can look:
– Breakfast: Gluten only (bread, crackers, cereal, rye toast) – wait 4 hours
– Lunch: Cow Dairy (yogurt, milk, cheese, cream) – wait 4 hours
– Dinner: Eggs (scrambled, poached, boiled) – wait 4 hours, etc.
If after the 4 hour waiting period, you notice no bloating, cramping, gas, joint pain, headaches, fatigue, then it may be safe to eat that food group. Always remember the last 2% though. If you’re really curious and want to see the data, an IgG Food Allergy Test is always available.
After introducing all food groups, except eggs and dairy as I already know them to be a food sensitivity for me, I was completely fine!
Final results (from Body Comp): No weight gain overall, small increase in fat % and small decrease in muscle mass % (to be expected because I did not exercise at all this week), ICW increased and ECW decrease (which means the cells became healthier).
My before and after were fairly negligible because I went into the detox fairly healthy. With some of my patients I have seen a 5-10lb weight loss with most the weight loss being water weight and some fat. It is remarkable what a good detox will do for the look and feel of the body!
