Chronic Stress Increases Risk of Stroke

Chronic Stress May Boost Stroke Risk

Written by Dr. Andrea Maxim, Naturopathic Doctor

Stress can never be avoided but our interpretation of stress can be managed to prevent the onset of illnesses associated with chronic stress.  A recent study showed that people scoring high on stress questionnaires, usually due to deaths in the family, divorce or severe trauma, are more likely to have a stroke later in life.  In fact, these people actually quadrupled their risk.

People with type A personalities (competitive, impatient, driven) living a stressful life more than doubled their risk of stroke.  Lifestyle factors like tobacco, alcohol, gender or physical activity appeared to significant effect on stroke risk.

Even if you feel that you are managing stress well today, the body has a memory and can still react to a stressful or traumatic event that happened as far back as five years.  Want to see how your body is recovering – try a urinary Adrenal test or 4-point cortisol test.  Both of which take minutes to do and offer a wealth of information.
