Losing Weight Improves Fertility

Study: Losing Weight May Improve Fertility by 34%

Written by Dr. Andrea Maxim, Naturopathic Doctor

For those women having difficulty conceiving, improving diet, exercise and lifestyle changes has been shown to substantially improve clinical pregnancy rate by 34% by the end of 12 months over controls.  These women were kept on a low-calorie diet with exercise and behavioral support for 12 weeks.  The average weight lost was 6.6kg and about 3.5 inches in waist circumference.

Obesity has been shown to reduce fertility and further cause complications to both mother and baby during pregnancy.  Women with a BMI of at least 30 are more likely to require in vitro fertilization or other medically induced fertility treatments more than healthy weight females (BMI of 24.9 or less).
