Salivary Hormone Testing
Written by Andrea Maxim, Naturopathic Doctor
Never discount the importance of understanding the signs and symptoms your body shows during hormone excess or deficiency. A detailed intake is always the most important aspect of developing a treatment plan. Sometimes naturopathic doctors need more quantitative data to get a well-rounded clinical picture of how your hormones are functioning in the body. Salivary Hormone Testing is one of the BEST ways to do this.
Why Salivary Hormone Testing?
Measuring any hormone can be successfully quantified through blood testing. Thyroid hormones are commonly requisitioned through your medical doctor and measured through blood very accurately, but I have found that measuring other active hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, cortisol and testosterone to be more accurate through salivary hormone testing. In the blood, 95-99% of these hormones are protein-bound, meaning not active in the body. Saliva is much better at accounting for active hormone levels, which is what we want to measure in the first place – are the hormones functioning in the body as they should.
Salivary hormone testing provides a noninvasive, feasible method of determining hormone excesses or deficiencies. These tests can be done in-office or in the privacy of your own home. The samples are simply mailed away and your healthcare practitioner will usually receive the results within 2-3 weeks. No muss, no fuss!
Types of Tests Available:
Female Hormone Panel
Male Hormone Panel
4-Point Cortisol Test (Adrenal Assessment)
Test results can be inaccurate based on food and drink consumption prior to sampling or if dental health is an issue.
