Vitamin C and E is Best if on the Pill

Supplementation with Vitamin C and E Helps Reduce Oxidative Stress Caused by Oral Contraceptives

Written by Andrea Maxim

Oral contraceptives on their own deplete a number of different vitamins. In particular, B vitamins and folic acid are greatly depleted by the birth control pill.  This study found that women who supplemented with vitamin E and C while on the pill had better liver function and increased antioxidant status.  This was seen through increased glutathione levels normally decreased by the oral contraceptive pill if taken alone.  Those females who only took the birth control pill without any protection had higher levels of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation which can promote cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammation and poor toxin elimination.
