Poor Sleep Causes Higher Calorie Intake

Calorie Intake Rises as Sleep Time Drops
A study performed at the Mayo Clinic found that healthy individuals that lost out on 1 hour 20 minutes of sleep, on average, were consuming almost 550 extra calories to healthy individuals maintaining good sleep habits.
Participants were isolated in a laboratory facility and allowed to consume food when ever they wanted but some had their sleep time cut by 1/3 and others asked to sleep as they normally would. Those people who’s sleep was reduced averaged an increase of 529 kcal per day whereas the control group actually accumulated a deficit of 143 kcal per day on average. The authors suspect that the increased food consumption could have been a method to stay awake in the sleep deprived group or simply out of boredom.
Sleep is the Best Medicine!
While this research is admittedly preliminary, sleep is simply the BEST and CHEAPEST way to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to health! Adequate sleep is necessary to ward off many diseases, not just obesity so think about that the next time you want to pull an all-nighter or stay up to watch that late movie on TV. Choose sleep over the perfect grade and invest in a PVR J
