Estrogen Dominance Could Be Causing Your Weight Gain
Written by Andrea Maxim, Naturopathic Doctor
How do we develop Estrogen Dominance?
Every man, woman and child are overexposed to man made, also known as “xenoestrogens” on a daily basis. These xenoestrogens are chemical compounds often used by industry when making our plastics, cosmetics and clothing. The key players to watch out for are Bisphenol A (BPA), Phlatates and Polychlorinated Biphenyl compounds (PCBs). These xenoestrogens have the ability to fit into the same receptor site as our natural estrogens and create a compounding effect with our endogenous hormones. The higher our exposure, the more estrogen deposits in our bodies and causes serious hormonal distruption.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Estrogen Dominance?
Here’s a list of the most common signs and symptoms of estrogen dominance:
|Weight gain (hips, buttock and thighs)
Heavy or long menses
Infertility (men and women)
Polycystic ovarian syndrome
Assessing Estrogen Dominance and Weight Gain
When I do my initial intake I often as my patients, where on your body have you been finding you gain the most weight? If the answer is Hips, Buttocks and Thighs then I usually ask about how their hormones have been functioning and where their potential exposures are. Even cellulite accumulation on the back of the thighs can be attributed to estrogen dominance.
Treating Estrogen Dominance
Stop your exposures right away! No disposable plastic water bottles, watch for the Dirty Dozen Toxic Cosmetic Ingredients, consume meats that are locally raised, and ideally grass-fed and organic. When it comes to removing the xenoestrogens already present, I often recommend consuming lots of cruciferous vegetables and/or taking an Indole-3-Carbinol supplement daily, which is the active ingredient found in broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussel sprouts, etc. In office, we can expedite the estrogen removal with a customized detoxification plan using high dosed nutrient powders for as little as one month along with dietary modifications.
I recommend doing an estrogen detox at least twice per year but more if the signs and symptoms are more severe. If you’d like to start on your next (or first) estrogen detox, please do not hesitate to contact me TODAY!
