Keep Your Health Goals All Year Long

Your Health Matters! Maintain All Your Hard Work All Year Long!

Written by Andrea Maxim, Naturopathic Doctor

To be honest, losing and maintaining a healthy weight is difficult at ANY time of the year, but for some reason our will power is weakest around the holidays and our health goals usually get pushed by the way side. Stress mounts, calories increase and motivations change. Here are some great tips that may help you get through this year unscathed.

Write it Down
The best way to achieve success is to hold yourself accountable for your actions. Keep a diet diary and exercise log that you write in everyday. Knowing that you have to plead guilty to that second round of Christmas cake in writing may have you consuming less of the “bad” stuff and more likely to keep calories down.

12 SIMPLE SNACKS RECIPES BELOW

Consume Less by Eating More Beforehand
Do not arrive hungry to a holiday event. Have a small meal, mostly containing lean protein, to curb your hunger pangs. This way you will be less likely to over indulge.

Go for the Gold!
We all know there’s that one special dish we cannot wait to eat during the holidays. Pass up those extra calories (pretzels, popcorn, chips) and go for those golden dishes that sing to you and your hungry belly!

Exercise, Move, Sweat
Now that you’re on holidays, there are no more excuses for not going to the gym every day. All you need 30min of a really great workout (alternating cardio with strength training), one that has you sweating and feeling like you gave it your all, every day. Exercising 60min or more a day is not recommended and may actually put your body through more stress in the long run.
If the gym is closed, take advantage of the warmer weather we have been having and take the family for a night walk around the block, check out the Christmas decorations. If the snow comes, then toboggan away! Take this opportunity to learn a new winter sport as a family.

Sleep
This is the time to really catch up on sleep missed over the year. Sleep gives you the most “bang for your buck” health wise and will have you starting the new year refreshed and invigorated. The number of hours per night varies from person to person, but the quality of sleep should be consistent. Find a time that works for you, and go to bed at that time every night. No TV, movies or reading in bed! Just head-to-pillow activity only.
Try taking a hot bath, sipping a cup of warm herbal teas like chamomile or lavender or our clinic favourite: 1 tsp of MagCalm in warm water 1 hour before bed.

This holiday is all about you and your health! Lets start 2012 on the right foot!
If all else fails, the Healing Journey Naturopathic Clinic will be open during the holidays so take advantage of a relaxing acupuncture treatment or try one of ourinvigorating hydrotherapy sessions.
