Walnuts May Boost Semen Quality

Written by Andrea Maxim, Naturopathic Doctor

Walnuts are not just yummy to eat, they’re actually good for your nuts too!  Young, healthy men (ages 21 to 35) who consumed 75g of whole-shelled walnuts every day for 12-weeks saw improvement to sperm vitality, motility and morphology compared to those who avoided nuts all together.

Walnuts are a natural source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, also found in fish oil.  Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to the diet and most North Americans are deficient in these beautiful healthy fats.  These fats help maintain cell integrity, decrease inflammation and support the immune system.  Walnuts also have healthy fiber, protein and other nutrients which make them a perfect snack to add to any infertility protocol.

Nutrition is huge when treating male infertility. Walnuts, fish oil, zinc, selenium and vitamin D are just a few of the basics we include in the protocol.  If libido is an issue, or the cause is unknown then use of the herb Tribulus has shown some amazing results in a short period of time at improving fertility in men. Acupuncture is also an amazing treatment to enhance the protocol. Please read TCM and Fertility – Male Fertility for more information.
