Low Fat Diets A No No

Study: Low Fat Diets Usually Pack on the Fat Instead of Lose

Written by Dr. Andrea Maxim, Naturopathic Doctor

Avoiding restricted diets is always the game plan at my clinic.  Most patients who are educated on a “weight loss” program usually fail to comply after a few weeks.  The term “Diet” already carried with it a negative term, one with food restrictions and hunger pangs.  I personally am a huge promoter of lifestyle programs, one where we teach our patients the value of whole food and balanced diets without calorie counting or harsh restrictions.

Recently, researchers found that yo-yo dieting actually increases one’s risk of failure in the future compared to a lifestyle program focused on low glycemic foods and higher in healthy fats and proteins. Low-fat diets specifically were found to be associated with a much lower resting energy expenditure, meaning less calories are burned while doing nothing, compared to a low-carb, low glycemic, moderate fat and protein diet.  Specifically I prefer a meal plan that is 40% carbohydrates, 40% protein and 30% healthy fats.
